Our Story

Set in the beautiful Creighton valley, flanked by dairy farms, our guesthouse offers guests a tranquil & relaxing experience in the country. Surrounded by lush lawns, trees, abundant birdlife & clean air, we invite you to come & spend time recharging at Smithfield Guesthouse.

Button Birding & Smithfield Guesthouse was established in 1999 by Malcolm & Gail Gemmell, and has since accommodated local and international travellers as well as enthusiastic birders from far and wide in search of a lifer or two. The home-stead originally built in 1908 and since added to, has 5 double bedrooms (3 en-suite). There are a further 2 en-suite garden rooms and a fully equipped one bed-roomed annexe (self-catering and wheel chair friendly) with views overlooking the distant Umzimkulu river. In addition there is also a secluded Garden cottage which sleeps 4.

The Creighton Valley hosts some of most sought after bird species in Southern Africa, due in large part to the extensive array of habitats. Specials such as Cape Parrot and Blue Swallow are amongst the list of rare and endangered species, whilst the nomadic Black-rumped Buttonquail appears tantalizingly in the summer. Our wonderful & knowledgeable Dalu will be your expert guide should you wish to book a tour with us.
